Oh, great.

"Excuse me." Enzo tries for another sink.

Dash moves to block him again.

"No. I don't think I will."

Oh. What a witty retort. Truly, Enzo is wounded.

Enzo closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. He does not want to get into a fight, even with this DIP switch. He'll get in trouble, he'll get Dani in trouble... and, frankly, even with his training, Dash is pretty intimidating.

He opens his eyes again. "Fine," he says, and turns to leave. Maybe he can wash his hands in the water fountain.

Halfway to the door, a hand lands on Enzo's shoulder.

"Get this straight, kid," snarls Dash. "I'm the big man around here. You don't even live here. You're making me look bad. No one gets to do that."

...well, so much for avoidance. No way is Dash going to let him walk away from this confrontation.

Might as well make it satisfying.

"Of course not," he says, turning his head just a little. "You do that on your own, you don't want competition."

"That's it, you've just earned yourself a double beating!" declares Dash, raising his fist.

Enzo watches Dash move, feels the shift of his weight, and smiles, worries evaporating.

Dash may have administered a great many beatings, but he's still a rank amateur. Outside of sports, he never fights anyone who can fight back. He has no clue about martial arts.

As the fist comes at his head, Enzo twists, grabs the arm behind it in both hands, bends, and heaves.

Dash yelps as he suddenly finds himself vaulting through the air. He hits the door upside-down, slamming it open, and lands on his back on the floor outside.

The buzz of hallway conversation goes suddenly quiet.

Enzo comes out into the hall, stepping carefully over the dazed Dash, and crouches down to address him.

"Get this straight," he says in a low voice. "Me and Dani are in love. You're a nuisance. Not a threat."

He straightens up and says more loudly, "Glad we had this talk."

As Enzo turns to leave, Dash, his head clearing, gives an inarticulate bellow, lurches to his feet, and lunges at Enzo.

This one is even less of a challenge than the first attack, and Enzo sends Dash Baxter, sixteen-year-old star quarterback and self-proclaimed King of Casper High, sailing over his head and into a bank of lockers in full view of a decent portion of the student body.

The hall erupts with cheers.

The commotion near the boys' bathroom didn't go unnoticed by Dani or the others. She hurried over in time to see Dash rush Enzo, only to wind up flying into the lockers.

She's cheering right along with the rest of the student body.

It's not that Enzo was trying to be the center of attention, but since it seems to be the case, he should probably say something badass.

He gives the recumbent Dash his best scornful look and says, "Pick on somebody your own size. You might have better luck."

Then he throws Dani a grin and attempts to join her.

No one ever accused Dash of being a fast learner. He rises, bellows, and attempts to get Enzo in a wrestling hold.

The results are about the same.

This time, Enzo's look is one of exasperation. "Will you quit file, already? I'm running out of witty banter!"

Dani laughs, but at the same time shoots Enzo a meaningful Look that says 'Careful of your slang.'

"All right, what in the Sam Hill is going on here?" barks the enormous woman stomping towards them.

...erp.

"It wasn't Enzo's fault!" Dani leaps to her boyfriend's defense immediately.

"The hell it wasn't!" declares Dash, struggling to his feet.

"Dash started it!" calls a student at the back of the crowd, and several others pipe up in support.

"I did not! He... I mean..." Dash trails off as the full horror of his situation sinks in; he can't very well claim that a twelve-year-old attacked and beat him up, not without losing any remaining shred of respect and machismo.

"I mean... he... asked me to help him practice! Yeah! Ha ha!" He gives Mrs. Tetslaff a rather sickly innocent grin.

"Lame!" bellows Everett.

"Yeah, even a blind earthworm could see through that excuse," a girl's voice chimes in.

A female student edges her way through the crowd. Enzo might recognize her as the third subject in the Halloween photo Dani showed him awhile ago, only dressed in more modern clothing.

"I don't know how it started, but Dash was the only one on the offensive," she continues. "And that's a lot of rage for just 'practicing'."

"Thank you, Miss Whittaker." She eyes Enzo. "You're that Gardner boy, right?"

"Yes, ma'am." Bolstered by the students' support, Enzo declares, "Dash tried to beat me up in the bathroom. For 'making him look bad'."

"I see. And he ended up on the floor out here because..."

Honesty is, he thinks, the only policy.

"I threw him through the door."
